I didn't expect too much from Hunter Prey, but holy hell it delivered!
Its a silent homage to sci-fi adventure in vein of Enemy Mine, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars and Pitch Black. Its clearly a low budget film, but its production values and sheer entertain factor make it a damn fine film that fully deserves every ounce of praise it garners.
The costumes which are most likely cobbled from star wars costumes and kids toys, but it looks so frickin cool! The paint jobs on the armor to the weapons is astonishingly convincing; the alien makeup effects are simple but astoundingly believable. Also the way the camera romanticised the barren rocky landscape made it seem unquestionably alien.
The key to Hunter Prey's success is in it's idea.
The idea became a self contained story that could be shot on a tiny budget.
It didn't reach for the stars and give us terrible dime-store craftsmanship, it delivered something indistinguishable from "Pitch Black" quality.
I guess what I'm saying is, I bought it.
I believed it.
Which is more than I can say for every "SyFy Original (TV) Movie" ever made.
The wonderful believablility combined with a great story, a brisk pace, thrilling action scenes, impeccable design, and some outstandingly good acting, make "Hunter Prey" one of THE best B-Movies. EVER.
Aside from a few negligible nitpicks, "Hunter Prey" impressed the hell outta me, and looks decidedly REALLY freaking cool!
Hunter Prey gets my FULL recommendation.
